Peter Gentenaar is a well-known Dutch artist noted for his impressive, paper-based installations. Gentenaar got his start in art as an etcher, but transitioned to working with paper and has been devoted to the medium ever since. His artwork is known for manipulating the light and shadow using thin and twisted paper ribbons, creating an ethereal and three-dimensional effect.
Gentenaar primarily works with abaca pulp, which is very thin and almost transparent. To create his unique sculptures, he first creates a mold that is soaked in water mixed with pulp. Once the pulp dries, Gentenaar removes the mold, leaving behind the paper sculpture. He then manipulates the paper by cutting it into thin strips, and overlapping and twisting the strips to create dynamic, organic shapes.
Incorporating Gentenaar's aesthetic and technique into my own art project can add a unique and distinct element. The use of plaster, wire, modroc and acrylic paint with flour can create a sculptural base that features textural effect.
Additionally, both my and Gentenaar's artworks seem to share the manipulation of the material elements to achieve a particular effect. While Gentenaar uses paper strips to create organic shapes and designs which are welcoming to the eyes, the careful combination of plaster, wire, modroc, and acrylic paint to create my sculptures can allow me to design unique and one-of-a-kind pieces with forms that evoke emotions and narratives.
