First concepts for my project based on the works of other artists

The first thing I decided to check is to paint an abstract from my project based on the work of other artists. Checking how they achieved such effects and what materials they used. Mainly my selected artists and those recommended by my tutors created using acrylic paints on canvas or paper. I personally chose small canvas boards for this. Below are the effects of my work and experimentation and the works of artists that were my inspiration.

The first of the works presents anger - madness. As inspiration I chose the work "Camino Real (II)" by Cy Twombly. According to a study on color psychology, the Colors she used represent anger perfectly, and these are the exact colors I would like to use in my final work. The composition itself, in my opinion, shows a kind of feeling in the head that can be caused by anger and frustration. Personally, I would like to show more madness and I think I will have to add some color or shade to represent it more. The composition would also have to be crazier and more must happen on the canvas.

Another work is Sadness - depression. Her inspiration was Lee Krasner and her work "Night Creatures". In the case of this work, the colors are slightly inverted but still indicate sadness. Maybe even more than my job. I think blue is too dominant for me, although it is associated with sadness and nostalgia. However, I am less suited to depression and here I would have to work more on dark colors. In Lee's work, these night creatures are also more visible, but I'm not sure if I would see depression and sadness that way. I need to delve more into the composition and the depiction of these emotions properly.
The next work presents Disgust - Awfulness. I chose 3 colors and an abstract depicting a vomiting woman. It was supposed to be disgusting and it is. Jenny Sevile who mainly paints very unusual people, actually their bodies because they are no longer alive. I'm not that good at drawing people so I did it in a typical abstract art. The colors obviously indicate disgust, strange shades of green. On her oracs we can see a much larger palette of colors and shades. Maybe when I finish my work, I'll try to get a little sloppy as well.

The penultimate job is a surprise-confusion. Here my inspiration was Helen Frankenthaler and her work "Gray Fireworks". The main color in my work was supposed to be orange, which indicates surprise, but also a combination of other colors such as grays and greens quite well reflects the atmosphere. Helen's main colors are grays and greens, which is why I associated them with my title of work. For this painting, I first used water poured on the canvas and only then I painted with paints to get the effect of such blurry, wet paint, like Helen. I really like this kind of abstraction and visually it speaks to me the most after Sam Francis.

The last abstraction is Happiness - Joy abstraction. The yellow background represents Happiness, and all the other colors and shapes represent how I feel when I am Joyful. The inspiration for this work was a mess from Sam Francis' work, because that's how I imagine the emotions of happiness and joy when I feel them. Sam's work also seems to be made with happy emotions due to the choice of colors.

  1. Have you referenced Jackson Pollock before in your blog? I can't remember seeing a post on him as a reference for your project?

  2. No I mistakenly typed him instead of Sam Francis.... :( Sometimes I don't know where my head is... ;) I didn't reference him yet as well but I will...

  3. Would like to see you use some of the textures that you created in the skills week. Particularly the work on foil with acrylic was working well. I thought the idea was that you combine these textures and approaches to create something wild and emotional. This work looks like a study and one that probably took a few minutes to make. Your work doesn't have to be rectangular either - maybe start working on paper, cutting it up and putting it back together, layering and using mixed media. You prefer sculptural work, then approach it in a sculptural way but in 2D.
